Gooseberries

The British gooseberry season starts in June and runs through until August.

Gooseberries are grown on small bushes but to make picking more manageable and less of a prickly experience, some are now grown along wires. They literally come in a variety of colours from green, red, yellow and white, depending upon whether they are dessert or culinary.

This versatile fruit provides a host of ideas for cooking, from the traditional gooseberry fool and pie, to excellent accompaniments to meat and fish. They also make delicious wine.
