Plums
Plums are one of the glory fruits of Britain and are so fresh and sweet with many distinctive flavours from different dessert and culinary varieties.
They freeze well and also make delicious jams, chutneys and wine. They provide unusual sauces to accompany savoury dishes and make amazing ice-cream.
The mainstay of the industry and most popular variety is the Victoria. It has a wonderful taste, is full of flavour and can be used for both dessert and culinary use.
However, many more new varieties are now coming on stream. Early varieties include Opal and Reeves, main season, Avalon and Junileum and finally the late cropping Marjorie's Seedling follow these.
Plums contain potassium and vitamin C, plus dietary fibre.
